A Neurociência das Terapias Psicológicas


The Neuroscience of Psychological Therapies summarizes knowledge of brain function and brain behavior relationships within the context of psychotherapy implementation. It describes how specific locations in the brain carry out specific activities, how the different activities are combined to yield normal and pathological behavior, and how knowledge of brain activities can guide psychological assessment and intervention. Specific topics include the influence of neural networks on discovery and change, the therapist's neuroscience, communicating with patients using the brain as reference, and using neuroscience concepts to compare and integrate traditional schools of psychotherapy. O livro Memory, History, Forgetting (La mémoire, l'histoire, l'oubli), de Paul Ricoeur, traz como epígrafe uma frase do filósofo francês (de ascendência russa) Vladimir Jankélévitch (1903- 1985):
He who has been, from then on cannot not have been: henceforth this mysterious and profoundly obscure fact of having been is his viaticum for all eternity.

Aqui está o original:
"Celui qui a été ne peut plus désormais ne pas avoir été : désormais ce fait mystérieux et profondément obscur d'avoir vécu est son viatique pour l'éternité." - V. Jankélévitch, L'Irréversible et la Nostalgie.

Aqui está minha tradução:
"Aquele que foi, a partir de então não pode não ter sido: daí em diante este misterioso e profundamente obscuro fato de ter vivido é seu viático por toda a eternidade".

"Viatique" admite algumas interpretações. Sua acepção original latina de "provisões para viagem" - aparentemente corriqueira - deixa entrever a idéia de um percurso em direção à eternidade e confere movimento a uma concepção congelada em sua dimensão inconcebível. O Robert nos diz: "Littér. Soutien, secours indispensable", isto é, "sustentáculo, apoio, defesa, proteção; recurso indispensável". Para tomar o rumo da eternidade é preciso trazer as marcas do tempo que a vida nos confere intransferivelmente - esse é o viático de Jankélévitch.

O Viático como extrema-unção, ou como sagração
Não há resquício de religião aqui: para a Tōrāh, a eternidade é o olam haba, o mundo que virá. Para o Islã, a eternidade só existe em outro mundo e está disponível no Jardim do Éden para os homens de bem e é mandatória no Inferno para os outros. O latim precede o Cristianismo. Na nota 13 da seção 81 de Ser e Tempo, Heidegger desperta a concepção de "temporalidade infinita" de seu sono estrutural - estou pensando no Aurélio, isto é, estrutura (5) - e "matematiza" esta concepção ao lembrar-nos de seu caráter assintótico. Sean Carroll chama nossa atenção para a "grandeza cosmológica implícita na palavra eternidade" em seu livraço From Eternity to Here.

O mistério básico
A poesia de Jankélévitch equilibra o elefante na ponta de um alfinete: no decurso do tempo humano não há primazia de essência ou de existência, nem tal necessidade. Não estou bem certo sobre o motivo, mas isto me lembra uma frase de Russell Epstein (e vou buscá-la para citar direitinho): "Em seu romance À Procura do Tempo Perdido, Marcel Proust argumenta que as descrições convencionais da fenomenologia da consciência são incompletas porque enfatizam demais as informações sensoriais salientes que dominam cada momento de nossa percepção consciente e ignoram a rede de associações que estão na base de tudo".

This is a melting pot of traditional folk and contemporary influences. ‘Crack Shandy in the Harbour’ is a true account of his time at that Plymouth café where narcotics anonymous held their meetings. ‘All For Me Grogg’ is a reinterpretation of the traditional Irish song made famous by the Clancy Brothers. Richard Dawkins has an opinion on everything biological, it seems, and in A Devil's Chaplain, everything is biological. Dawkins weighs in on topics as diverse as ape rights, jury trials, religion, and education, all examined through the lens of natural selection and evolution. Although many of these essays have been published elsewhere, this book is something of a greatest-hits compilation, reprinting many of Dawkins' most famous recent compositions. They are well worth re-reading. His 1998 review of Alan Sokal and Jean Bricmont's Fashionable Nonsense is as bracing an indictment of academic obscurantism as the book it covered, although the review reveals some of Dawkins' personal biases as well. Several essays are devoted to skillfully debunking religion and mysticism, and these are likely to raise the hackles of even casual believers. Jackendorf updates the ground-breaking investigation into human language introduced by Noam Chomsky as "generative linguistics," in a conversational, accessible style. Human experience, in this view, is constructed out of such principles, which operate in music, vision, and, most speculatively, in social organization. The very urgency of the debate over "how" to tell the story (and indeed what the story is) continues to intensify in proportion to the uncertainty of our times. Considering its official title (bearing an impressive imprimatur from Oxford University Press, the vanguard of scholarly reference works), Richard Taruskin's grand opus might appear at first glance to eschew the more-heated arenas of debate involving cultural history. Quite the contrary: Taruskin throws down the gauntlet at once and passionately joins in the fray. In the process, he strips the story of music's development in the West (i.e., Europe and America) of its deceptively innocuous trappings and received ideas, thrusting it into the spotlight of contemporary critical inquiry. The result, virtually a priori, is a highly controversial reexamination of a narrative that will cause even the most open-minded music lover to do a number of double-takes. What's extraordinary about Taruskin's achievement is how immensely engrossing, insightful, provocative, fresh, and downright brilliant the "history of Western music" becomes in his weaving of it.

But why yet another sweeping history when the New Grove Dictionary of Music has been recently overhauled (in an edition to which Taruskin prolifically contributed), and when long-standing classic texts such as Paul Henry Lang's Music in Western Civilization continue to be reissued? The heart of the matter lies in the very ambition behind this new history. First, some of the fun factoids: at nearly 4,000 pages (along with an additional resource volume containing master index, chronologies, and bibliography), The Oxford History of Western Music weighs nearly 20 pounds and took a decade to write. In other words, this isn't history-by-committee. Its perspective from the point of view of one massively learned individual is at once the work's chief strength and its Achilles heel. Taruskin's powerful voice echoes the kind of "old-fashioned" synthesis, with its attempt at an "overarching trajectory," of such pioneering cultural historians as Jacob Burckhardt or perhaps even the epic sweep of Gibbon's The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire—-an antidote to the curse of ivory-tower specialization. But, more crucially, Taruskin arms that voice with the toolkit of contemporary historiography to pursue a critical rethinking of how Western music turned out as it did, and where it is today. His singular viewpoint anchors Taruskin's attempt to show that "the literate tradition of Western music is coherent at least insofar as it has a completed shape."

Bréhier já foi o rei da cocada preta em filosofia antiga, até ser banido para o limbo, mas merece que v. dê uma olhada e julgue por si mesmo(a). Assim como dizem hoje em dia: "Video killed the radio star" (o que é menas verdade, eu acho), o que 'matou' Bréhier para a posteridade foi seu estilo - veja um exemplo dele no artigo Neoplatonismo e Spinozismo, em tradução de Paulo Domenech Oneto.

Présenter tous ces maîtres à penser d'une manière succincte, sans pour autant sombrer dans la simple encyclopédie superficielle, c'est-à-dire notamment en exprimant et en pénétrant un certain «esprit» qui régnera durant toute cette période et par rapport auquel se définissent, d'une manière ou d'une autre, tous ces maîtres, est une tâche que peu de spécialistes actuels oseraient entreprendre. L'ouvrage de Bréhier n'en est que plus précieux pour nous.

A revista Kronos é de Varsóvia, e eventualmente publica artigos em inglês. Esta excelente entrevista do grande Ray Brassier pode ser lida AQUI, e vou traduzir alguns trechinhos para abrir o apetite dos leitores. Acrescento que sou fã de carteirinha do homem.

KRONOS: O 'niilismo' é um dos conceitos filosóficos mais ambíguos. Qual é sua idéia dele? Você se consideraria um niilista? O niilismo exclui totalmente a religião? O que me diz da fé niilista de Meillassoux, alimentada pela inexistência de Deus?

RB: Muito simplesmente, o niilismo é uma crise de significado. Essa crise é historicamente condicionada, porque aquilo que entendemos como 'significado' é historicamente condicionado. Nós passamos de uma situação na qual o fenômeno do 'significado' era auto-evidente para outra na qual ele se tornou um enigma, e um dos principais focos da investigação filosófica. A tentativa de explicar o que é o 'significado' implica uma profunda transformação de nossa compreensão dele; uma transformação que considero que irá ser tão abrangente como as modificações de nossa compreensão do espaço, do tempo, da causalidade e da vida ocasionadas pela física e pela biologia. A visão pré-moderna do mundo, que durou diversos milênios e incluiu a transição do politeísmo para o monoteísmo, é aquela na qual o mundo e a existência humana são intrinsecamente significantes. (Digo 'é', e não 'foi', porque essa visão do mundo ainda persiste hoje em dia, mesmo entre pessoas de boa escolaridade). Nesta visão do mundo existe uma ordem natural, e ela é compreensível para os seres humanos em suas linhas gerais, ainda que não em cada um de seus detalhes particulares. A religião em geral, mas o monoteísmo em particular, oferece a chave para se decifrar essa ordem natural ao explicar a maior parte (mas não a totalidade) da intenção de Deus ao criar o mundo: Deus é bom, criou-nos à sua imagem, e assim temos que procurar ser bons e seremos recompensados com a felicidade eterna se conseguirmos, ou punidos com o sofrimento eterno se fracassarmos. Deus é a fonte definitiva e a garantia dessa ordem significativa através da qual os seres humanos são capazes de dar sentido às suas vidas em termos de uma batalha entre o pecado e a redenção, o conflito entre o bem e o mal, etc.

O surgimento da ciência natural moderna matematizada, por volta do século 16, marca o ponto no qual esta maneira de tirar sentido de nós mesmos e do mundo começa a se desenvolver. Ela não entra em colapso imediatamente, mas começa a perder sua sanção teórica oficial no discurso da teologia quando a nova ciência começa a minar as bases conceituais mais importantes desta última. No decurso de poucos séculos, a antiga suposição de que tudo existe por uma razão, de que as coisas são intrinsecamente carregadas de propósito e foram projetadas de acordo com um plano divino, é lenta mas sistematicamente desmantelada, primeiro na física, depois na química e eventualmente na biologia, onde (essa antiga suposição) durou mais. O espaço-tempo curvo, a tabela periódica e a seleção natural: nada disso é compreensível em termos narrativos. Galáxias, moléculas e organismos não existem para nada (NT - com qualquer finalidade). Por mais que tentemos, torna-se cada vez mais difícil elaborar uma narrativa racionalmente plausível sobre o mundo que satisfaça nossa necessidade psicológica por histórias que se desenvolvam a partir de um início, através de uma crise e até uma resolução definitiva.

Por certo o 'niilismo', em seu sentido mais amplo, entendido como aquela situação desagradável na qual a vida humana e a existência são condenadas em geral como 'desprovidas de significado' (isto é, 'sem propósito'), certamente é anterior ao desenvolvimento da ciência moderna (pense no Eclesiastes).Mas o surgimento da ciência moderna lhe dá uma importância cognitiva que ele não tinha antes, porque onde o niilismo pré-moderno era uma consequência de nossa impossibilidade de entender - 'Não podemos entender Deus, portanto não existe significado para criaturas de entendimento limitado como nós' - o niilismo moderno vem de seu (NT - da ciência moderna) sucesso sem precedentes - 'Nós entendemos a natureza melhor do que entendíamos, mas esse entendimento não mais requer o postulado de um significado básico'. O que ocorreu nessa reviravolta é que a inteligibilidade se tornou independente do significado: com a ciência moderna, a racionalidade conceitual se desligou das estruturas narrativas que continuam a prevalecer em teologia e na metafísica de propensões teológicas. Isto marca um decisivo passo à frente no lento processo através do qual a racionalidade humana abandonou gradualmente a mitologia, que basicamente é a interpretação da realidade em termos narrativos. O mundo não tem autor, e não existe qualquer história cifrada na estrutura da realidade. Nenhuma narrativa se desenrola na natureza, certamente não aquela narrativa monoteísta tradicional na qual o drama humano de pecado e redenção ocupava o centro do palco, e a humanidade era um espelho de Deus.



Tudo isto pode parecer uma banalidade: não é certo que os existencialistas já tinham entendido isso? Mas a diferença é que os existencialistas ainda achavam ser possível para uma consciência humana prover o significado que estava ausente na natureza: a existência pode não ter significado, mas a tarefa do homem é dar-lhe um significado. Meu argumento é que essa solução não é mais digna de crédito porque está em curso um projeto para se entender e explicar a consciência humana em termos compatíveis com as ciências naturais, termos tais que os significados gerados pela consciência podem eles mesmos ser entendidos e explicados como produtos de processos sem propósito mas perfeitamente inteligíveis, que são ao mesmo tempo neurobiológicos e socio-históricos. Minha afirmativa não é que a ciência teve sucesso em explicar a consciência, mas apenas que já foi feito considerável progresso, e o ônus da prova recai sobre aqueles que insistem em negar tal progresso e que propõem descartar essa tentativa (NT - de explicar a consciência) como sendo impossível por princípio. Já houve muitas dessas tentativas, mas não considero nenhuma delas remotamente convincente, nem deveriam considerar aqueles cientistas que estão realmente ocupados em entender e explicar a mente humana. É claro que muitos pensadores, incluindo alguns cientistas, persistem em tentar arrancar algum tipo de narrativa psicologicamente satisfatória de elementos da moderna visão científica do mundo. Mas esse esforço está fadado ao insucesso porque a própria categoria da narrativa é que foi tornada cognitivamente redundante pela ciência moderna. A ciência não tem necessidade de negar a importância de nossa evidente necessidade psicológica da narrativa; ela apenas a rebaixa de seu status metafísico previamente fundamental para o status de uma 'ficção útil' epistemicamente derivativa.

Alguns podem objetar que existe uma contradição latente entre minha negação da realidade metafísica da ordem narrativa na natureza e meu recurso a uma narrativa do progresso cognitivo na história intelectual. Mas não existe contradição: é perfeitamente possível seguir os passos do progresso explanatório no reino conceitual sem invocar alguma narrativa metafísica duvidosa sobre a inelutável marcha do Espírito para diante. Penso que a leitura reconstrutiva de Hegel por Robert Brandom faz exatamente isso - liberta o ideal normativo do progresso explanatório de sua expansão metafísica, e em última análise mitológica, no interior da história universal do Espírito.

Como Nietzsche, acho que o niilismo é uma consequência da 'vontade de verdade'. Mas à diferença de Nietzsche, não acho que o niilismo culmina com a afirmativa de que não existe verdade. Nietzsche fundiu verdade com significado, e concluiu que já que esse último é sempre resultado do artifício humano, a primeira nada mais é do que uma questão de conveniência. Entretanto, uma vez que a verdade seja descartada, tudo o que resta é a diferença entre fortalecer ou enfraquecer ficções, onde a 'vida' é a fonte fundamental do fortalecimento e árbitro definitivo da diferença entre ficções que promovem a vida e ficções que a depreciam. Como o abandono da verdade enfraquece a razão para se renunciar à ilusão, ele acaba por legitimar a elaboração de narrativas fictícias posteriores, das quais só se exige que comprovem ser 'promotoras da vida'.

Considero-me um niilista precisamente na medida em que recuso esta solução nietzscheana e continuo a acreditar na diferença entre verdade e falsidade, realidade e aparência. Em outras palavras, sou um niilista precisamente porque ainda acredito na verdade, à diferença daqueles cujo triunfo sobre o niilismo se dá às custas do sacrifício da verdade. Acho que é possível entender a falta de significado da existência, e que essa capacidade de entender o significado como um fenômeno regional ou restrito marca um progresso fundamental na cognição.

Quanto a niilismo e religião: ora, a credibilidade racional da religião pode ser criticada sem se evocar a ciência moderna ou o niilismo - Demócrito e Epicuro fizeram isso há uns dois mil anos utilizando argumentos que são válidos até hoje, ainda que os teístas prefiram ignorá-los. Mas, é claro, a irracionalidade da crença religiosa nunca impediu seu florescimento; de fato, é precisamente essa irracionalidade que a imuniza contra a refutação racional, já que a religião é projetada para satisfazer necessidades psicológicas, e não requisitos racionais. Marx estava certo: a religião jamais será erradicada até que se evapore a necessidade dela. Obviamente, essa evaporação terá que ser efetuada tanto pratica quanto cognitivamente.

Não li L'Inexistence Divine, de Meillassoux, então não sei que tipo de argumentos ele utiliza para legitimar a hipótese de um inexistente 'Deus-por-vir'. Estou certo de que esses argumentos devem ser excepcionalmente engenhosos. Mas permaneço cético, já que não vejo qualquer necessidade para essa hipótese. De fato, vejo essa constante fascinação filosófica pelo monoteísmo como profundamente perniciosa e acho que se deve declarar uma moratória para que se evite qualquer 'especulação sobre Deus' por parte dos filósofos. Não acho que seja mera coincidência que a crítica da racionalidade científica da maior parte da filosofia do século 20 caminhe de mãos dadas com uma restauração de temas teológicos. Obviamente a religião satisfaz necessidades humanas profundas, mas ela tem sido uma catástrofe cognitiva que impediu continuamente o progresso epistêmico - em oposição ao revisionismo pernicioso que afirma que o monoteísmo sempre esteve ao lado da ciência e da verdade. O conhecimento humano progrediu a despeito da religião, nunca por causa dela. Os filósofos simplesmente não deveriam ter nada a ver com ela.

In addition to well studied areas of investigation, such as mate choice and reproduction, the volume also includes chapters on the philosophical underpinnings of evolutionary psychology, comparative perspectives from other species, recent neurobiological findings, and gets to grips with the issue of cultural evolution in relation to human psychology. All the chapters combine a solid review of the relevant literature with well reasoned arguments and robust discussions of the major findings, as well as original insights and suggestions for future work. All the chapters are written by active researchers in the field of evolutionary psychology and so, as might be expected, a wide diversity of opinions is presented. The critical, wide-ranging and diverse discussions are thought-provoking and, taken together, the handbook as a whole provides a well balanced assessment of current research, from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. In addition, the editors provide an initial chapter and section introductions that place the contributions in context and help guide the reader by highlighting the major themes raised by the contributors. While each chapter thus stands on its own, and the book can be used as a work of reference, the integration of themes across chapters and sections means it can also be read in its entirety as a complement to textbooks and other publications in the field. The Oxford Handbook of Evolutionary Psychology is the definitive text on this burgeoning field.

Heidegger - Ser e Tempo


Martin Heidegger paved the road trod on by the existentialists with the 1927 publication of Being and Time. His encyclopedic knowledge of philosophy from ancient to modern times led him to rethink the most basic concepts underlying our thinking about ourselves. Emphasizing the "sense of being" (dasein) over other interpretations of conscious existence, he argued that specific and concrete ideas form the bases of our perceptions, and that thinking about abstractions leads to confusion at best. Thus, for example, "time" is only meaningful as it is experienced: the time it takes to drive to work, eat lunch, or read a book is real to us; the concept of "time" is not.
Unfortunately, his writing is difficult to follow, even for the dedicated student. Heidegger is best read in German: his neologisms and other wordplay strain the talents of even the best translators. Still, his thoughts about authentic being and his turning the philosophical ground inspired many of the greatest thinkers of the mid 20th century, from Sartre to Derrida. Unfortunately, political and other considerations forced Heidegger to leave Being and Time unfinished; we can only wonder what might have been otherwise. Rob Lightner

The pervading mood on Inside the Thunder, Dougie MacLean's first album in several years, is sadness. The title comes from "Song for Johnny," a tribute to the late Johnny Cunningham, who was once replaced by MacLean in the band Silly Wizard. "It seems we never learned to play it slow," MacLean sings, "We just danced inside the thunder." But on the album, he seems to have learned finally to play it slow. These are deliberately paced songs with attractive folk-rock arrangements, many of the instruments played by MacLean's son Jamie MacLean, who also produced, engineered, mixed, and even mastered the record. MacLean sings them wistfully and with occasional touches of anger...

Harmony, Heinrich Schenker's first published work, originally appeared in German in 1906 as "New Musical Theories and Phantasies, by an Artist." Its unusual title indicates what was to be the rationale of Schenker's lifework, that artistic problems call for artistic solutions. Schenker's dedication to the formulation of a complete musical theory above the commonplace theoretical discussions was, in essence, his quest for a pattern in nature for music as art.
