Abobrinhas da editoria sobre o livro Networks of the Brain:

The connection matrix of the human brain (the human “connectome”) represents an indispensable foundation for basic and applied neurobiological research. However, the network of anatomical connections linking the neuronal elements of the human brain is still largely unknown. While some databases or collations of large-scale anatomical connection patterns exist for other mammalian species, there is currently no connection matrix of the human brain, nor is there a coordinated research effort to collect, archive, and disseminate this important information. We propose a research strategy to achieve this goal, and discuss its potential impact.

Over the last decade, the study of complex networks has expanded across diverse scientific fields. Increasingly, science is concerned with the structure, behavior, and evolution of complex systems ranging from cells to ecosystems. Modern network approaches are beginning to reveal fundamental principles of brain architecture and function, and in Networks of the Brain, Olaf Sporns describes how the integrative nature of brain function can be illuminated from a complex network perspective. Highlighting the many emerging points of contact between neuroscience and network science, the book serves to introduce network theory to neuroscientists and neuroscience to those working on theoretical network models.Brain networks span the microscale of individual cells and synapses and the macroscale of cognitive systems and embodied cognition. Sporns emphasizes how networks connect levels of organization in the brain and how they link structure to function. In order to keep the book accessible and focused on the relevance to neuroscience of network approaches, he offers an informal and nonmathematical treatment of the subject. After describing the basic concepts of network theory and the fundamentals of brain connectivity, Sporns discusses how network approaches can reveal principles of brain architecture. He describes new links between network anatomy and function and investigates how networks shape complex brain dynamics and enable adaptive neural computation. The book documents the rapid pace of discovery and innovation while tracing the historical roots of the field. The study of brain connectivity has already opened new avenues of study in neuroscience. Networks of the Brain offers a synthesis of the sciences of complex networks and the brain that will be an essential foundation for future research.

Mais um CD de Asaf Avidan (veja 28.02.2010)

Asaf Avidan & The Mojos - Through The Gale (2010)
Label: High Fidelity, Telmavar Records
MP3 320Kbps 28:55min 66.00 MbGenre: Folk Rock, Acoustic, Alternative

The story of a captain leading his crew over troubled water is told here by Asaf Avidan and The Mojos in their new 2010 concept album. The songs, accordingly are dealing with the difficulties and full of images taked from the sea world. This is kind of a come back to the 60's and 70's concept albums, what is called Progressive Rock, which is tightly kept all along the album 8 tracks. This is definitely a diging [rocess into styles like Progressive, Psychedelia and Avantgarde, much more complexed than the Rythem & Blues of the Mojo's early works. Surely, this is an honest, true trial to create a superb musical story, which will appeal to the more complexed music fans.

Tracks:
1. Hoist Up The Colors (3:02)
2. Through The Gale (3:07)
3. The Sirens & The Sea (3:13)
4. At The Edge Of The Map (1:28)
5. Sailors Are We (4:21)
6. Poseidon's Fury Unleashed (5:20)
7. Oh Western Wind (3:00)

Como nosso cérebro processa o que vemos

New mathematical model of brain information processing predicts some of vision peculiarities
January 28, 2011 by Larry Hardesty

Todas as coisas vivas

The top 10 life-forms living on Lady Gaga (and you)
By Rob Dunn Jan 4, 2011 10:03 AM

Every Living Thing: Man's Obsessive Quest to Catalog Life, from Nanobacteria to New Monkeys
Rob Dunn

Biologists and laypeople alike have repeatedly claimed victory over life. A thousand years ago we thought we knew almost everything; a hundred years ago, too. But even today, Rob Dunn argues, discoveries we can't yet imagine still await. In a series of vivid portraits of single-minded scientists, Dunn traces the history of human discovery, from the establishment of classification in the eighteenth century to today's attempts to find life in space. The narrative telescopes from a scientist's attempt to find one single thing (a rare ant-emulating beetle species) to another scientist's attempt to find everything in a small patch of jungle in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. With poetry and humor, Dunn reminds readers how tough and exhilarating it is to study the natural world, and why it matters.

Primeiro disco de Shirley Collins

Shirley Collins - Sweet England (1959)
MP3 CBR 320Kbps / 118 Mb 18 tracks Covers (600 dpi)
British Folk Time: 45:20 FileSonic, FileServe

The first CD reissue of Shirley Collins' debut album, recorded when she was 23, and still uncertain of herself. The album received a critical walloping on release, and it took another few years before Collins felt ready to record again (successfully, this time, in tandem with Davey Graham). It took a good decade before Sweet England itself began to be accepted as a key recording in the folk revival. It's easy to understand why the record struck an unsympathetic note -- Collins' vocal approach has a fragile, almost maudlin quality to it, presenting a raw sadness even when the songs themselves are light-hearted. Combine that with the bare arrangements, which depend on simple five-string banjo, and the result is a difficult listen -- the immediacy of much of the work being done in the folk revival is missing; Sweet England demands repeated listening, which becomes hard work indeed. Ironically, however, Collins' approach has more in keeping with folk tradition than many of the folk revival performers (one of the closer comparisons might well be A.L. Lloyd, another performer who was often not immediate in his impact.) Topic has cleaned up the master recordings as best they can; listeners will notice some flaws, and a very small degree of distortion on Collins' vocals. ~ Steven McDonald, AllMusic

Progressos em Neuroanatomia

Neuroanatomy is the study of the anatomical organisation of the brain. Reciprocal communication between the brain and the cardiovascular system is important in sustaining neurobehavioral states that allow organisms to cope with their environment. Furthermore, in vertebrate animals, the routes that the myriad nerves take from the brain to the rest of the body, and the internal structure of the brain in particular, are both extremely elaborate. As a result, the study of neuroanatomy has developed into a discipline in itself, although it also represents a specialisation within neuroscience. This book briefly covers the neuroanatomy of the vagal circuit, the functional significance of tonic cardiac vagal function and ways of quantifying this measure for research purposes. Also examined are the fibre composition and functional topography of peripheral nerves, and innovative methodologies that facilitate measurements of nerve fibres. This book contributes new insights to the controversial discussion about neurotrophin effects on different cell populations and at different time points in retinal programmed cell death (PCD). Other chapters in this book provide a comparative overview of the distribution of orexin cells and fibres across the brains of vertebrates in relation to function, the neuroanatomical structures and autonomic nerves involved in headaches and a re-evaluation of the structure of the human anterior olfactory nucleus, with an updated description of this structure in the normal human.

Progressos na recuperação de informações musicais

Sound waves propagate through various media, and allow communication or entertainment for us, humans. Music we hear or create can be perceived in such aspects as rhythm, melody, harmony, timbre, or mood. All these elements of music can be of interest for users of music information retrieval systems. Since vast music repositories are available for everyone in everyday use (both in private collections, and in the Internet), it is desirable and becomes necessary to browse music collections by contents. Therefore, music information retrieval can be potentially of interest for every user of computers and the Internet. There is a lot of research performed in music information retrieval domain, and the outcomes, as well as trends in this research, are certainly worth popularizing. This idea motivated us to prepare the book on Advances in Music Information Retrieval.

Bobby Long

Bobby Long – A Winter Tale (2011)
mp3 VBR~240 kbps 86 MB Release date: February 1st, 2011
Indie Folk, Singer/Songwriter, Alternative/Indie Rock

British singer/songwriter Bobby Long came to recognition when his friend Robert Pattinson sang his song "Let Me Sign" (co-written with Marcus Foster) on the soundtrack to the popular teen vampire film Twilight in 2008. A Winter Tale, his debut studio album for ATO Records, demonstrates that he has spent a lot of time listening to early albums by Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Johnny Cash, having apparently learned chords and fingerpicking he employs on his guitar, some harmonica playing, and, particularly, his poetic lyric-writing style. His husky singing voice also sounds a bit like the young Dylan, or perhaps more like a less arch Tom Petty. But if Long has captured the style necessary to make him the next New Dylan, he hasn't quite figured out the issue of lyrical content. He tends to write his words in what seems to be a stream-of-conscious style in which, as long as the rhymes come along regularly and the words sound interesting (and he sings them with the appropriate tone), it doesn't much matter what they mean. There is a poetic persona at the heart of his songs, and it's the usual one of the lonely hero, who is romantic himself even if he seems unable to be romantic with a potential loved one at whom the songs are directed. "I'm crazy to love," he declares in "A Passing Tale," "and I'm crazy to die/I'm lost in this world, and I don't know why." In "Two Years Old," he at least seems to have some point to his melancholy; the music may suggest Johnny Cash, but the words suggest Wilfred Owen, the World War I era British poet who died in the trenches, but not before capturing the loss of innocence -- and of life -- suffered in a conflict that seared the conscience of the English people and, to a certain extent, still does. At such a moment, Long isn't just a young man playing with words, but there aren't many moments like it on A Winter Tale. - AllMusicGuide

Neuropsicologia - livro novo

From translating the patient’s medical records and test results to providing recommendations, the neuropsychological evaluation incorporates the science and practice of neuropsychology, neurology, and psychological sciences. The Black Book of Neuropsychology brings the practice and study of neuropsychology into concise step-by-step focus—without skimping on scientific quality. This one-of-a-kind assessment reference complements standard textbooks by outlining signs, symptoms, and complaints according to neuropsychological domain (such as memory, language, or executive function), with descriptions of possible deficits involved, inpatient and outpatient assessment methods, and possible etiologies. Additional chapters offer a more traditional approach to evaluation, discussing specific neurological disorders and diseases in terms of their clinical features, neuroanatomical correlates, and assessment and treatment considerations. Chapters in psychometrics provide for initial understanding of brain-behavior interpretation as well as more advanced principals for neuropsychology practice including new diagnostic concepts and analysis of change in performance over time. For the trainee, beginning clinician or seasoned expert, this user-friendly presentation incorporating ‘quick reference guides’ throughout which will add to the practice armentarium of beginning and seasoned clinicians alike. Key features of The Black Book of Neuropsychology: • Concise framework for understanding the neuropsychological referral. • Symptoms/syndromes presented in a handy outline format, with dozens of charts and tables. • Review of basic neurobehavioral examination procedure. • Attention to professional issues, including advances in psychometrics and diagnoses, including tables for reliable change for many commonly used tests. • Special “Writing Reports like You Mean It” section and guidelines for answering referral questions. • Includes appendices of practical information, including neuropsychological formulary. The Black Book of Neuropsychology is an indispensable resource for the range of practitioners and scientists interested in brain-behavior relationships. Particular emphasis is provided for trainees in neuropsychology and neuropsychologists. However, the easy to use format and concise presentation is likely to be of particular value to interns, residents, and fellows studying neurology, neurological surgery, psychiatry, and nurses. Finally, teachers of neuropsychological and neurological assessment may also find this book useful as a classroom text.

As palavras e as coisas

To understand mental function, we need to uncover the representations and processes underlying our ability to comprehend and to produce words, sentences, numbers, and objects. The unique contribution to the field of neuropsychology is the investigation of these representations and processes in individuals who have sustained selective brain damage. This special issue of Cognitive Neuropsychology exemplifies this type of research and is designed to pay tribute to Eleanor M. Saffran, one of the pioneers of this discipline.

As obras para violino solo de Bach

J.S. Bach's sonatas and partitas for solo violin have had a central place in the repertoire since the mid-18th century. This engaging introduction to these works is the first comprehensive exploration of their place within Bach's music, focusing on their structural and stylistic features as they have been perceived over time. Combining an analytical study, a historical guide, and an insightful introduction to Bach's style, the book will help violinists, scholars, and listeners develop a deeper personal involvement with many aspects of these wonderful pieces.

Vamos Falar Japonês

Nihongo Notes Vol. 1-10 Complete Set
Osamu Mizutani & Nobuko Mizutani

The Japan Times, Ltd. 1977-1990 10 Volumes, 720 articles PDF 40 MB

The "Nihongo Notes" series of books are a compilation of "Japan Times" columns about the Japanese language that deal with specific conversations and situations; for example, how to start a business discussion, how to develop and conclude discussions, and how to make requests and criticize others. Examples of actual discussions, polite and informal, are included, as well as several examples of common [and often amusing] mistakes; but this is not just a common phrase book: each entry is given a two-page explanation of usage.

Nihongo Notes 1 - Speaking and Living in Japan: This is a collection of 70 columns which first appeared in The Japan Times under the title of "Nihongo Notes" from August 1, 1976 to November 27, 1977, together with a list of common expressions used in daily life. These columns are designed to explain some points that are difficult for foreigners to understand but that, once explained, can help them understand the Japanese language better.

Nihongo Notes 2 - Expressing Oneself in Japanese: This book is a compilation of the 70 columns which appeared in The Japan Times from December 3rd, 1977 to April 1st, 1979 under the title "Nihongo Notes". A section of polite conversational expressions has been added to supplement the columns. While continuing to deal with the actual usage of various Japanese expressions, the book attempts to provide more detailed explanations: specific situations such as how the Japanese start business discussion, how they develop and conclude discussions, and how they make requests and criticize others.

Nihongo Notes 3 - Understanding Japanese Usage (70 columns from April 8, 1979 to August 3, 1980): The columns in this volume deal with such diverse aspects of Japanese usage as socially significant words and phrases, exchanges in professional situations, reserved-sounding speech, the speech of senior members towards younger members in a group, the speech of young people, and word play.

Nihongo Notes 4 - Understanding Communication in Japanese (70 columns from August 10, 1980 to December 6, 1981): The columns in this volume deal with such diverse aspects of Japanese usage as expressions used at ceremonial occasions like wedding parties, expressions used to reinforce the feeling of belonging to the same group, expressions used for implicitly conveying one's requests, emphatic expressions of one's feelings, and important nonverbal expressions like bowing and knocking.

Nihongo Notes 5 - Studying Japanese in Context (70 columns from December 13, 1981 to April 10, 1983): The columns in this volume include various expressions of reserve and consideration used toward the listener, and also several common mistakes that foreigners are apt to make.

Nihongo Notes 6 - Situational Japanese 1 (74 columns from April 17, 1983 to September 9, 1984): While continuing to explain the actual usage of various Japanese expressions, we have changed the format slightly from this volume on to focus on how Japanese is used in specific situations and for specific purposes. In other words, we have shifted the emphasis from an expression-oriented approach to a situation-oriented one.

Nihongo Notes 7 - Situational Japanese 2 (74 columns from September 16, 1984 to February 9, 1986): This volume explains, among other things, how the Japanese talk in familiar conversation, how men's and women's speech differ, how pronunciation changes in rapid speech, and how the topic is indicated in Japanese sentences.

Nihongo Notes 8 - Situational Japanese 3 (74 columns from February 16, 1986 to July 19, 1987): This book explains how some basic words and phrases are used in social life, how the Japanese modify their speech depending on the purpose, and what expressions are most likely to precede certain categories of speech such as making a request, apologizing, stating an opinion, and reporting what another person has said.

Nihongo Notes 9 - Situational Japanese 4 (74 columns from July 26, 1987 to December 18, 1988): This volume discusses how the Japanese express themselves for such purposes as making requests, asking about someone's intentions, offering explanation, showing goodwill, and criticizing others. The book also explains the subtle difference between two similar expressions and show how to foreigner can avoid making mistakes in using them.

Nihongo Notes 10 - Situational Japanese 5 (74 columns from December 1988 to May 18, 1990): This book discusses, among other things, how the Japanese express themselves for such purposes as stating an opinion, thanking someone for some service, offering to do a favor, giving advice, and giving compliments. The book also explains the subtle difference between two similar expressions and show how to foreigner can avoid making mistakes in using them.

The Maldives

The Maldives - Listen To The Thunder (2009)
mp3 VBR~270 kbps 108 MB
Alternative Country-Rock, Americana, Alternative/ Indie Rock

One of the most promising bands on the Pacific Northwest's roots rock scene, the Maldives are an expansive nine-piece band whose music recalls the mature and graceful storytelling of the Band and the rougher, more forceful attack of alt-country acts such as the Old 97's and the Drive-By Truckers. The Maldives (named for a string of islands in the Indian Ocean) are led by lead vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Jason Dodson, who formed the band in early 2002, not long after relocating to Vancouver, WA from his native Virginia. Dodson and guitarist Jason Bonn originally conceived the Maldives as a band playing indie pop influenced by the Flaming Lips and Wilco, but Dodson became disenchanted with the style and his songwriting started moving into a country-influenced direction. During the early years of the Maldives, musicians came in and out of the lineup at a heady pace (Dodson told a journalist in 2006 that approximately 30 people had joined and quit the band by that point), and for a while Dodson was using the name while touring as a solo act. Near the end of 2004, Dodson was set to play a show at Seattle's renowned roots music venue the Tractor Tavern, and he asked Bonn and fellow guitarist Tim Gadbois to join him for the show; the performance was a success that sparked a new beginning for the Maldives, and soon the trio was joined by bassist Chris Warner, Chris Zasche on pedal steel and keyboards, and drummer Ryan McMackin. This lineup recorded the Maldives' self-titled debut album in 2005, which was released by Dodson a year later once he pulled together the money for mastering and pressing. Before long, three more members were added to the group -- Kevin Barrans on banjo, accordion, and keyboards, Seth Warren on violin, and Tomo Nakayama on percussion and keyboards -- and word began to spread through the Northwest about the group's impressive, dynamic live shows and Dodson's intelligent, nuanced songwriting. In the fall of 2009, the nine-piece Maldives, cited by several local critics as one of Washington's best live bands, released Listen to the Thunder through the independent label Mt. Fuji Records. --> AMG

When they are ruling the sold-out stages of Ballard Ave. and beyond, The Maldives are full-on Wrangler head-bangers. They’re a lot country and a lot rock‘n roll, because there is nothing little about The Maldives–not their nine full-time members, their sound, or their potential. But as big as they are on stage, there’s a delicateness to their album Listen to the Thunder. In the adept hands of Kory Kruckenberg, not a one of those nine-instruments overshadows Jason Dodson’s twang-tinged vocals or his poetic every-man lyrics. Whether it’s Seth Warren’s fiddle or the singing of Chris Zaches’ pedal steel, each instrument in The Maldives vast country orchestra cradles Dodson’s songs, enhancing a complex mood the lyrics are setting. Dodson writes songs that come from a place of living life, not fighting it, and it celebrates that life without glossing over its sadness. Listen to the Thunder is as much about life’s burden as it is about it’s beauty, and at any given moment it’s equally likely to tug at your heartstrings as get your blood pumping. They may be one of Seattle’s biggest bands (literally and figuratively), but as the album reveals, there’s more to The Maldives than meets the eye.

The Baby Lab
How Elizabeth Spelke Peers into the Infant Mind
By Margaret Talbot, September 5, 2006
The New Yorker

Ryan Bingham

Ryan Bingham & The Dead Horses – Junky Star (2010)
MP3 CBR 320kbps 128 MB
Alt-Country, Americana, Contemporary Singer/ Songwriter, Country-Folk

Songwriter Ryan Bingham has grown tremendously on this third full-length. Barely 30 years old, his previous work showed promise but carried the excess expected of a novice. Bingham won both a Golden Globe and an Oscar for "The Weary Kind," the theme song from the film Crazy Heart. The song was produced by T-Bone Burnett, creating a partnership extended on Junky Star. Bingham and his Dead Horses—drummer Matthew Smith, bassist Elijah Ford, and guitarist Corby Schaub, prove the song was no fluke. The sound is pure Americana; these 12 lyrically sophisticated yet direct songs, reflect a host of tense, lost, desperate, individuals dreaming the same dark dream, one that suggests that we are all growing tenser with the times. Bingham has trimmed his songwriting to the bone, while learing to use metaphor and metonomy like a veteran. A former rodeo rider, he wears his influences proudly: Guthrie, Dylan, Van Zandt, Ely, Earle, Clark, and Hubbard. He begins with a sandblasted vision of America in "the Poet." Amid acoustic guitars, a lonesome harmonica ,restrained electric and bass drum, Bingham's whiskey-smoked vocal offers a lyric theme the entire album turns on: "As I keep walking, people keep talking/About things they've never seen or done/Homeless sleep in the park, lovers kiss in the dark/Me, I keep moving on through time." Time is suspended as Bingham's protagonists tell stories from the road (some of them bone-chilling), from America's past and present, physically and psychologically. Rootlessness as peace of mind is portrayed via country rock in "The Wandering," but the feeling in "Strange Feeling In The Air," the title track, a deeply moving acoustic murder ballad (they are strewn throughout the album), and the angry uptempo "Depression," reflect a contradiction: constant movement is the key to survival, not necessarily peace. "Hallelujah" is another murder ballad with a disturbing twist. "Lay My Head On The Rail," is pure folk poetry illustrated by a lone acoustic guitar. The blues in "Hard Worn Trail," are rooted in poverty worry, strained, broken relationships resulting in the search for comfort. It doesn't come anywehre on Junky Star. "All Choked Up Again," set to Waylon Jennings' brand of outlaw country closes it out by mining the existential darkness deeper. Bingham is unflinching, but his songs hold out for a glimmer of something else. The only real consolation Junky Star offers is that no one need feel alone in her or his desperation-this is a true accomplishment. Bingham has delivered a set of songs that mirrors our uncertain times in a musical language that doesn't unduly distort or romanticise them.

Deadstring Brothers

Deadstring Brothers - São Paulo (2010)
MP3 VBR~234kbps 64MB
Alternative Country-Rock, Americana, Alternative/ Indie Rock, Country

There's no sense repeating the Rolling Stones circa Exile on Main St. comparisons that will likely dog Detroit's Deadstring Brothers for the foreseeable future. It's more productive to start from that assumption and progress on to the songs and performances from the band's fourth release and third for scrappy Americana label Bloodshot. The imprint is a perfect fit for the group's raw, ragged, and above all soulful country-rock. Frontman Kurt Marschke replicates Jagger's languid drawl down to the occasional falsetto he employs on whiskey-soaked rockers such as "Houston," but this is more of a tribute to, rather than an imitation of, the Stones' notorious frontman. Better still is the overall quality of these songs, all but two of which are written or co-penned by Marschke. The female harmonies of frontwoman Masha Marjieh, so impressive in concert and previously a staple of the Deadstrings' driving vocal attack, are relegated to the sidelines since she only contributes to three tracks. The tattered truck-stop country at the heart of the group's approach combines with a Cajun accordion on the lovely ballad "Yesterday's Style," one of a pair of contributions from U.K. guitarist Spencer Cullum. His wailing pedal steel threads the country & western that weaves through so much of this disc. Tracks such as the soaring midtempo "Can't Make It Through the Night," with its female gospel-infused background vocals, are better than the filler on the mid-'70s Stones albums the DBs obviously love. Some might hear the affecting "Adalee" and dismiss it as a poor man's "Angie" or "Coming Down Again" (both from Goat's Head Soup) but with its accordion and heartfelt vocal from the always impressive Marschke, it's more than a knockoff. Few bands nail this somewhat retro sound more impressively than the Deadstring Brothers, so even if it's not exactly original, the album remains compelling, affecting, and refreshingly out of step with much of contemporary roots rock. As consequências do Iluminismo

What is the relationship between contemporary intellectual culture and the European Enlightenment? In Consequences of Enlightenment, Anthony Cascardi revisits the arguments advanced in Horkheimer and Adorno's seminal work Dialectic of Enlightenment. Cascardi argues that postmodern culture does not reject Enlightenment beliefs and explores the link between aesthetics and politics in thinkers as diverse as Habermas, Derrida, Arendt, Nietzsche, Hegel and Wittgenstein. He reverses the tendency to see art simply in terms of the worldly practices among which it is situated. Aesthetic objects, he argues, are themselves capable of disclosing truth.

Royal Society – Brain Waves: Neuroscience, Society and Policy
Daniel Lende Posted: January 20, 2011

O excelente blog do PLOS, Neuroanthropology, dá uma dica:

The Royal Society has just put out the first module of its Brain Waves project, which provides a primer on the state of art in neuroscience and how neuroscience intersects with society. The ten essays cover a range of relevant topics for neuroanthropology, with an introduction written by Prof. Colin Blakemore.

The first section covers the scope and limits of neuroimaging, neuropsychopharmacology, neural interfaces, consciousness, and reward.

The second section focuses on neuroscience and society, with takes on benefits, risks, neuroethics, and governance.

All the essays, which generally range from 8 to 12 pages and are written in clear prose and have citations for further exploration, have been written almost entirely by prominent British experts. They are freely available as pdfs.

A máquina memética

What is a meme? First coined by Richard Dawkins in his 1976 study The Selfish Gene, a meme is any idea, behavior, or skill that can be transferred from one person to another by imitation: stories, fashions, inventions, recipes, songs, and ways of plowing a field, throwing a baseball, or making a sculpture. It is also one of the most important--and controversial--concepts to emerge since Darwin's Origin of the Species. Here, Blackmore boldly asserts: "Just as the design of our bodies can be understood only in terms of natural selection, so the design of our minds can be understood only in terms of memetic selection." Indeed, The Meme Machine shows that once our distant ancestors acquired the crucial ability to imitate, a second kind of natural selection began: a survival of the fittest among competing ideas and behaviors. Those that proved most adaptive--making tools, for example, or using language--survived and flourished, replicating themselves in as many minds as possible. These memes then passed themselves on from generation to generation by helping to ensure that the genes of those who acquired them also survived and reproduced. Applying this theory to many aspects of human life, Blackmore brilliantly explains why we live in cities, why we talk so much, why we can't stop thinking, why we behave altruistically, how we choose our mates, and much more. With controversial implications for our religious beliefs, our free will, and our very sense of "self", this provocative book will be must reading any general reader or student interested in psychology, biology, or anthropology.

Informação, Matéria e Energia

Information, Matter and Energy - a non-linear world-view
Pierre Madl & Maricela Yip 2006
University of Salzburg

Assim, a informação, enquanto terceito elemento dessa relação, obviamente determina a forma e a gestalt.
